Marty Gehres was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He grew up in the Five Oaks neighborhood where he and his wife, Julie Forman, still reside today. Julie is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in Troy, Ohio. They both enjoy spending their time outside of work enjoying all that Dayton has to offer and playing with their dog, Baker.

Education

Marty attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and Chaminade Julienne High School before graduating from Ohio University with a degree in Political Science. Subsequently, he felt called to follow in his parents' footsteps and decided to further his education in law. Marty graduated Cum Laude from the University of Dayton School of Law.

Professional Experience

After receiving his bachelor's degree, Marty moved home to start his career as a Deputy Clerk of Court for the Dayton Municipal Clerk of Court before returning to the University of Dayton to pursue his law degree.

As Assistant City Attorney for the City of Dayton, Marty focused on using his legal expertise to work on projects directly impacting citizens. He advocated and crafted legislation to decriminalize marijuana; took on national corporations to stop several dollar stores from bringing liquor into the community; and helped bring scooters and the Oregon District DORA to downtown.

In 2019, Dayton faced many challenges and Marty was there to help the City and Dayton residents navigate the difficulties. He assisted in the suit against a hate group rallying in downtown, resulting in several concessions, which made the demonstration as safe as possible. He also supported the City's response to the Oregon District mass shooting.

Priorities as the Clerk of Court

Marty's priorities as Clerk are: 1) making the court more accessible to the community; 2) providing service to people in need; 3) delivering top-notch customer service; 4) assisting everyday people in navigating our legal system; and 5) bringing the court into the digital age.
